Why I Became a Wealth Manager

Life can be unexpected. It can take us on a journey with twists and turns that lead us down a different path than the one on which we started. For example, we may start in one career, but then our experiences open our eyes to other areas we want to pursue or open doors to new opportunities. That’s my story, at least, and it’s how I found my way into my career as a wealth manager.

Starting My Career

After earning a bachelor’s degree in business administration and management, I began working in the business world, eventually becoming the owner of a distribution company. After about 20 years I realized I wanted something different. I wanted to help people enjoy a better retirement plan, and I also wanted to use my entrepreneurial spirit to help others grow their businesses. So I sold my distribution company and pursued additional education, earning the Certified Wealth Strategist® designation. This set me on the path to a new career in the financial industry. 

My Career Today

Today I get to serve pre-retirees, retirees, and small business owners, helping them shield and grow their income while managing risk so they can meet their retirement goals. I co-founded our firm, Arrowhead Wealth Advisors, with Dave Eversfield a few years ago. When we’d been partners together at a previous firm, we became frustrated with the limitations of working within a large company. So when that firm was bought out by a larger company, we decided to start an independent firm to serve our clients better. 

My background as a business owner has contributed to the relationships with my business-owner clients. One of the biggest problems I see business owners face is when they’re planning for retirement and are torn between investing in their business to keep it going versus taking money out of the business to invest in their retirement. Because of my experience owning and selling a business, I can understand my clients’ unique situations and best advise them in their decision-making. My clients know I genuinely care about them, and they trust me because they know I wouldn’t do anything for them that I wouldn’t do with my own account. 

Why I Love What I Do

Clients including me in their decision-making is a big deal, I don’t take the trust they have in me lightly. One of the most fulfilling aspects of my job is ensuring their cash flow and safeguarding their wealth to help them have a successful retirement. Knowing I have used my experience and knowledge to help my clients obtain their financial goals is very rewarding—it’s why I’m passionate about what I do.
